Precocious Maria takes on the responsibilities of the home while her mother works to support them.  Maria finds her innocent adventures with the neighbor boy, Rodrigo, to be her doorway to a normal childhood. An unexpected encounter with a stranger changes her outlook on life.  In the end she finds hope through friendship.
